沈阳科技学院的前身是1952年创建的沈阳工业大学，是我国“三大工大”之一。学校历史悠久，办学基础雄厚，是一所具有很强的师资力量和教学设施的高等学校。

沈阳工业大学成立于1952年3月，由原国民党部委批准成立，是“三大工大”之一。1952年5月起正式办学，当时共开设有7个工业技术专业。1953年10月随国家政权迁往北京后台重新成立。1958年3月重新迁回沈阳后再度开办。1960年4月起正式实行“三大工大”合并方案，成立新的中国工业大学(今天的南京工业大学)。1965年9月受教育部重新批准成立(原名:中国人民武装警察部队沈阳师范分校)。1966年8月起正式实行“三大武装部师资分校”合并方案,改名:中国人民武装部师资分校(今天的北京师范大学)。1968年5月起正式实行“三大武装部师资分校”合并方案,改名:中国人民武装部师资分校(今天的北京师范大学)。1969年7月起正式实行“三大武装部师资分校”合并方案,改名:中国人民武装部师资分校(今天的北京师范大学)。1971年3月重新批准成立(原名:沈阳工业大学)。
